Vision plans are a type of health insurance that covers oral care. While health insurance can cover medical, dental, and vision, a targeted dental plan may be best for your family’s needs.

Vision allows us to experience so much in the world around us. Taking care of your eyes through routine care is important. In addition to overall vision health, did you know your eyes can also detect such conditions as high blood pressure?

Vision insurance is another ancillary policy that can be added if it isn’t an included coverage. Like dental insurance, this can be part of an employer-sponsored benefit or purchased individually.

What should I consider for vision insurance?

When we experience health-related issues, it can change everything. You have flexibility in the cost of your dental plan with the decision you make about getting the coverage you want with deductibles and out-of-pocket costs you can afford. For example, a plan may cover 100% for two cleanings in a year (preventative) in exchange for a premium. You can weigh the cost of the annual premium against what two cleanings would cost out of pocket without insurance.

We currently have plans that cost $29 for an individual with a $50 deductible. Preventative services are covered at 100%, basic services at 80% and major services at 50%, with a benefit period maximum of $1000.

Something beyond a standard cleaning could be needed for your teeth. Instead of preventative services, you may need basic services or major services.

1. Coverage

Our licensed insurance professionals will work with you to customize your coverage, including options for basic eye exams, glasses, contacts, and surgery.

2. Network

You should ensure that your eye doctor is in the available network. If you don’t have one, the network will provide a list of available doctors. Also, confirm coverage outside the network as some policies may not offer any while others do at a higher cost.

3. Cost

Monthly premiums will depend on coverage and usage intentions. Plans are available for $9/month/person covering an annual eye exam for a $15 copay for an adult. A single adult can receive a yearly check-up for $108/year + $15 copay ($123 total) which can be compared to out-of-pocket costs.

If there is a need for glasses and/or contacts, this policy also has coverages that will help reduce those costs. It will be important to note if both can be selected in a year or if you must choose between one or the other.
