Farm Liability Insurance

It’s understandable for farms to insure their livestock, equipment, and horses. However, it’s important to remember that liability protection is equally crucial for every farm. At Hitchings Insurance, we believe that all farmers deserve the reassurance liability protection provides. Unfortunately, it’s often overlooked and becomes one of the last items discussed in farm insurance risk plans.

What is farm liability insurance? Liability insurance covers any farm accident you may become liable for and is put in place to cover the legal expenses and the punitive damages that would be awarded in a lawsuit.

We’ve seen significant losses occur from time to time. They’re called accidents for a reason. Nobody intends to cause injury or property damage to others. Sometimes it just has a way of happening. We help guide our farmers in making the correct decision regarding their liability limits. We match their overall risk profile and asset levels and develop a liability plan that transfers their risk appropriately.

Farm Liability Plans &
Coverages to Consider

Base Farm Liability

The underlying farm base liability limit is typically purchased at the highest available limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence with a $2,000,000 aggregate per policy period. This covers any type of farm accident you may become liable for and is put in place to cover the legal expenses and the punitive damages that would be awarded in a lawsuit.

Farm Umbrella Liability

This is the most critical liability decision you’ll make and often is the hardest. A farm umbrella is an additional layer of liability protection that blankets the base farm liability, the personal auto liability, the farm auto liability, any recreational vehicle liability, and any personal liability exposure (home, pool, etc.). These policies can be purchased from $1,000,000 up to $10,000,000. Large commercial operations can look at options above $10,000,000 as needed.

Recreational Vehicle Liability

Liability coverage against any farm toys (as we like to call them): gators, side-by-side, XUVs, ATVs, and snowmobiles.

Personal Auto Liability

Liability for any personally owned vehicles. Typically, a farm owner’s spouse’s vehicle is covered personally, and this is done intentionally as certain medically related coverages are afforded to our farm partners when this is purchased.

Farm Auto Liability

Liability for any farm trucks includes semis, straight trucks, grain trucks, and potentially pickups.

Farm Cyber Liability

Cyber coverage is available to protect our farm partners against the ever-changing digital world.

Pollution Liability

Pollution liability is vital to any farm operation. This can be purchased up to $1,500,000 in our base plans, and we have additional options for increased coverage as needed. It covers any spray drift or pollutant seepage into water tables or ground and could include runoff-type situations.

Farm Liability is the last good inexpensive insurance and should be taken very seriously. You and your family have worked for generations!
